Positive Energy Impact Report 2024

The Value of Solar Panel Recycling: In 2024, we recycled 238 solar modules! The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) projects that by 2050, up to 78 million metric tons of solar panels will reach the end of their life cycle, generating around 6 million metric tons of solar e-waste annually. The good news? Solar panels can be recycled and Positive Energy Solar is committed to ensuring that ours are. PES continues to explore sustainable solutions for retired solar equipment, guided by our commitment to people, planet, and profit. Beyond the environmental benefits, solar panel recycling holds economic potential as well. PV cells contain valuable, finite elements like gallium and indium, essential for manufacturing. By recovering these materials, we help conserve critical resources while also supporting a growing industry. IRENA estimates that by 2050, approximately $15 billion in reusable materials could be recovered through solar panel recycling; that’s an investment in a cleaner and more sustainable future. We partner with WeRecycle, the largest U.S. solar panel recycler to process our panels when they reach the end of their useful lifespan, though most of our systems in the last 27 years are still under warranty. When panels have minor cosmetic damage but remain functional, we minimize waste by offering them at a discount to our team.
